Ohio State vs Notre Dame match preview

Why Notre Dame Will Win

If it’s possible to get into a College Football Playoff-type matchup like this with little to no pressure, that’s what Notre Dame is dealing with.

Of course, there is pressure considering the way the team failed to close against Oklahoma State in the Fiesta Bowl – the debut of new coach Marcus Freeman. Of course the program must be good enough to win games like this and not just try old college. However, Ohio State is expected to get off the bus and roll with ease.

Even more than that, the weight of the world rests on the shoulders of a Buckeye defense coming off a hugely disappointing 2021 – relatively speaking.

OD was fine by any normal standard, but rational and reason need not apply here.

Ohio State must play for the national title. It’s supposed to win the Big Ten Championship. It’s supposed to beat Michigan. None of those three things happened last season, and the defense took most of the blame.

Enter the Notre Dame offense. It’s great as a receiver, it has a tight finish on Michael Mayer, and after a year of rebuilding and rebooting the line, the payoff is just around the corner.

On the other hand, Freeman is a defensive coach, his coordinator Al Golden knows what he’s doing, and between the great minds in the training room, a strong secondary loaded with NFL talent and a sensational corps of linebackers, the defense that can be the plot coming out of this might be wearing the road uniforms.

Yes, yes, yes – the defense. It’s the Buckeye attack that’s going to be the problem for the Irish.

No one has Ohio State skill position talent, the offensive line will be positive again. If CJ Stroud gets time and the offense is balanced, Notre Dame may not have the ability to maintain production. Starting quarterback Tyler Buchner needs to have the game of his life and…

What will happen

The Irish defense must be able to hold out better than many realize.

Ohio State will win – the D will really be better – but it will be a while before the dam breaks. Notre Dame will keep doubling up without breaking for most of the game, but Stroud will find a rhythm in two good scoring plays to finally let everyone in the stadium breathe easier.
